What is Root Canal Therapy?

What is Root Canal Therapy | Ellwood Dental | General and Family Dentist SW Edmonton

Root canal therapy is a treatment option that removes infection from inside a tooth. The most common reasons for a tooth becoming compromised and requiring root canal therapy are deep cavities or fillings, untreated cracks or fractures, or an injury to the tooth itself. To save a tooth from extraction, the pulp (the living tissue inside the tooth made up of nerves and blood vessels,) bacteria, and any infection is removed and the resulting space is filled with special medicated dental materials, restoring the tooth to its full function. A compromised tooth that is left untreated can lead to extreme pain, a dental abscess, or possible tooth loss.

Root canal therapy is the optimal solution to save a tooth that would otherwise require removal. While many patients believe that removing a problematic tooth is the only solution, that is not always the case. Extracting (or “pulling”) a tooth will often be more expensive down the road and can cause significant problems for the adjacent teeth – such as tipping or drifting into the empty space. Root canal therapy is a highly successful treatment that usually lasts a lifetime, although on occasion it is possible that a tooth will have to be re-treated due to new infections.

As teeth with root canal therapy are already compromised with large fillings or cracks, dentists will usually recommend a dental crown after root canal treatment.
